In 1974 The New York Dolls broke up. In 1979 Patti Smith performed before a crowd of 85-thousand in Florence, Italy. During the show she announced her retirement from the stage, saying she was going to concentrate on her family life with husband Fred "Sonic" Smith. The Police performed at The Assembly Rooms, in Derby, England. In 1983 Men Without Hats' "Safety Dance" peaked at number three on the pop singles chart. AC/DC's "A Flick of the Switch" broke into the albums chart. In 1988 Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child O' Mine" hit number one on the pop singles chart. In 1990 Ratt released the album "Detonator." The Hard Rock Cafe opened in Las Vegas. In 1991 Guns N' Roses released the single "Don't Cry." In 1992 Smashing Pumpkins performed at the International 2 in Manchester, England. In 1996 R.E.M. released the album "New Adventures in Hi-Fi." In 1998 The Beastie Boys received the Video Vanguard award at the MTV Video Music Awards. In 2003 R.E.M. saluted the late Warren Zevon, performing "Find the River" at a show in Los Angeles. The Pixies had reportedly reunited, and were planning a tour for 2004. In 2004 Lenny Kravitz's new look and the dress Bjork wore at the Olympics were named as some of the "10 Moments That Rocked The World Of Style" in "People" magazine's "Best and Worst Dressed" edition. In 2005 MTV, MTV2, VH1, VH1 Classic, and CMT offered a simultaneous presentation of the Hurricane Katrina fundraiser "ReAct Now: Music & Relief." A wide variety of rock, pop, rap, and country stars -- including 3 Doors Down, Staind, Green Day, and the Dave Matthews Band -- took part in the telecast. Money raised went to several charities, including the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and America's Second Harvest. 3 Doors Down performed a Hurricane Katrina benefit concert in Atlanta, in addition to participating in the "ReAct Now" telethon, while Switchfoot played a charity concert in Los Angeles for The Salvation Army's hurricane relief efforts. In 2008 The Dave Matthews Band was among the artists who performed benefits in the Stand Up For A Cure concert series to raise funds and awareness for lung cancer research at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. In 2009 Ozzy Osbourne was honored with a special tribute during the first day of the three-day Sunset Strip Music Festival in Los Angeles. Nine Inch Nails played their final performance at Los Angeles' Wiltern Theater before going on an indefinite hiatus as a touring act. Word surfaced that the White Stripes' Jack White had donated nearly 170-thousand-dollars to a project to restore Clark Park baseball field in southwest Detroit. The rocker made the contributions anonymously. He supported the rehab effort because as a kid he had played ball in Clark Park.<
