Morrissey Sparks Controversy With Comments About Chinese
Morrissey is spurring controversy over comments made about the people of China in an English magazine. The UK's "Guardian Weekend Magazine" quoted the former Smiths frontman's reaction to reports about animal welfare in China. He said, quote, "Absolutely horrific. You can't help but feel that the Chinese are a subspecies." Martin Smith, spokesperson for the English nonprofit organization Love Music Hate Racism responded to Morrissey's comments, saying, "It really is just crude racism. When you start using language like 'subspecies,' you are entering into dark and murky water."
Love Music Hate Racism has reportedly "disavowed" Morrissey in the wake of the "Guardian" piece. In 2008, the rocker donated 28-thousand pounds or about 43-thousand US dollars to the organization following an interview with NME.com in which he discussed immigration into England. In that interview, Morrissey made comments like "England is a memory now" and "the gates are flooded." |
