Truck Driver Who Killed Snyder Woman In Fatal Crash Sentenced
(Batavia, NY) -- The truck driver who was watching Internet porn when his 18-wheeler killed a Snyder woman on the Thruway last year is off to prison. Prosecutors say 45-year-old Thomas Wallace of Ohio was given a sentence of three to nine years behind bars after pleading guilty to second degree manslaughter. Authorities say on December 12th, Wallace was sleep deprived and streaming online pornography when his rig barreled into 33-year-old Julie Stratton's disabled vehicle near Pembroke. Investigators say Wallace had only four-and-a-half hours of sleep the 27 hours before the crash and was faking log books used to monitor truck drivers' time on the road. Stratton was a mother of two small boys now ages four and one, both with special needs. Just before the crash, her car hit a deer and was stranded in the road while she called 911 for help. Police say several other cars were able to swerve out of the way. At yesterday's sentencing Wallace could have faced as much as five to 15 years behind bars. |
