NY About To Collect State Taxes On Indian Cigarettes
(Albany, NY) -- New York State is scheduled to start collecting taxes on Indian cigarette sales on Wednesday. The last time the state attempted to enforce the tax during the George Pataki Administration, members of upstate tribes protested by blocking traffic on the Thruway. However, Governor David Paterson does not expect a similar outcome. The taxes will be collected at the wholesale level before the cigarettes even reach the Indian dealers. Governor Paterson has said that the State Police are warning that the enforcement could result in violence and death. The tax collection issue is also working its way through the courts as opponents have filed legal challenges.
