Karen Carpenter married real estate developer Thomas Burns in a ceremony in Beverly Hills.
1984 - Prince's movie "Purple Rain" opened in the UK.
1985 - UB40's "I Got You Babe" hit number one on the UK pop singles chart.
Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69" peaked at number five on the U.S. pop singles chart.
1987 - Michael Jackson's video "Bad" made its debut on CBS.
1993 - Michael Jackson's doctor said the singer was fit following a brain scan. Meanwhile, Jackson brothers Jermaine and Tito walked off the set of the "Today" show because they were being asked questions about Michael's legal troubles.
1995 - The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum opened in Cleveland, Ohio.
1998 - Madonna filed a lawsuit against the YMCA in an effort to keep the organization from building a high-rise residential tower near Lincoln Center in New York City.
2000 - Songwriter Harold Lee Clayton, who wrote the S.O.S. Band's 1980 hit "Take Your Time (Do It Right)," was killed in a car accident.
2002 - NASA announced its approval of 'N Sync's Lance Bass as a civilian astronaut for an upcoming Russian flight to the International Space Station.
2003 - Elton John was among the performers at the 100th birthday celebration of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle company in Milwaukee.
2004 - Patti LaBelle launched her new jewelry line with an appearance on the Home Shopping Network. She described the 21-piece collection as, quote, "flirty and fun."
Ray Charles' last studio album, "Genius Loves Company," was released. The disc featured collaborations with artists like Elton John, Natalie Cole and Norah Jones. Charles died nearly three months prior at the age of 73.
2006 - Kelly Clarkson, Pink, The Pussycat Dolls, The Black Eyed Peas, Shakira and Beyonce took home Moonmen at the MTV Video Music Awards. There were no multiple winners at the ceremony, which took place at New York's Radio City Music Hall.< |
