Ontario County Beach Closed Due To Algae
(Richmond, NY) -- You won't be able to beat the heat at one beach in Ontario County. That's because authorities in Richmond had to close the Sandy Bottom Beach on Honeoye Lake because of algae. Swimmers are being told to avoid the water because of the high levels of blue-green algae, which has been known to make people and pets sick. Last week, Wayne county authorities say Bayside Beach on Sodus Bay was closed for the same reason. Authorities there say dead birds and fish have been found and a dog had to be put down after becoming sick following a swim. Richmond officials say the algae has grown because of a combination of high temperatures, sunshine and rain runoff.
