Former Box Tops Frontman Dies
Singer-guitarist Alex Chilton has died. The Memphis "Commercial Appeal" says the veteran rocker, who as a teenager provided the lead vocals to The Box Tops hits "The Letter" and "Cry Like a Baby," passed away at a hospital in New Orleans Wednesday. Chilton's longtime friend John Fry tells the paper that earlier in the day Chilton said he wasn't feeling well, and paramedics were called. They took him to the hospital, where he died in the emergency room. Chilton was 59. Chilton was still musically active, and performing with his group Big Star. That band was slated to perform this weekend at the South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Surviving Big Star members haven't announced yet if they'll still perform as scheduled on Saturday.
