Looking Back: Michael Jackson's "This Is It" Concert Announcement
One year ago today, fans of the late Michael Jackson received some very good news. On March 5th, 2009, the "King of Pop" stood inside London's O2 Arena and announced at a press conference that he would be kicking off a series of dates at the venue beginning in July.
Only ten dates of Michael Jackson's "This Is It" tour were originally announced, but due to the incredible demand a total of 50 shows were eventually included. Unfortunately for Jackson followers, the music icon passed away just weeks before he set foot on the O2 Arena's stage. Jackson's June 25th death captured headlines worldwide. While fans were no longer able to attend the singer's upcoming concert series, they were given a glimpse of what they missed in the hit documentary "This Is It." The film chronicled Jackson's preparations for his upcoming concerts as well as providing behind the scenes footage of the pop icon and his concert crew. "This Is It" arrived in theaters on October 28th for a two-week run, but due to the film's popularity it was extended through the Thanksgiving weekend. To date, "This Is It" has grossed more than 260-million-dollars. |
