Cuomo Announces Nationwide Agreement With Citibank To Extend Free Checking
(New York, NY) -- State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo says Citibank has agreed to a plan to extend free checking services to customers who were soon going to be charged for their accounts. Cuomo says Citibank will extend the benefits of the free checking accounts to consumers who signed up for them in 2009 through all of 2010. Citibank was under fire for offering "free checking" services for consumers who opened up certain accounts, but never disclosing that the free service could be terminated at Citibank's discretion. The bank had decided they would start charging the holders of those accounts a monthly fee and per-check charges beginning today, but that plan has now been changed. Cuomo says Citibank's decision to agree to the plan with his office will help consumers in New York and across the country who are trying to make ends meet in this difficult economy.<
