How Catholic Symbolism Made its Way into Native Communities

The seemingly unexpected connection between Catholicism and Native American communities will be examined in “Unraveling the Mystery of Catholic Symbolism in Iroquois Communities,” the next lecture presented by Friends of Ganondagan (FOG)  on Saturday, December 4 from 12 noon to 2:00 pm at the Victor Town Hall (85 East Main St).  Michael Galban (Washoe, Paiute), Ganondagan State Historic Site director of interpretive programs, will be discussing who brought these symbols and their impact on Iroquois communities.  This program is the second of three presented this year in FOG’s “Lunch & Lecture” Series, funded in part by the New York Council for the Humanities.

Michael Galban has worked on numerous publications and has been a consultant for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) series, The War That Made America, as well as for the History Channel and local public television productions involving early woodland Indians.  For many years, he also has been dedicated to preserving and reviving many traditional Native arts, and is a respected artisan, craftsman, and teacher.

Participants should register online at www.ganondagan.org/programs/CatholicSymbolism.html or by phone (585) 742-1690.  Lunch is included in the price of registration.  Prices are $20/Friends of Ganondagan Members; $25/Non-members.  All program proceeds support Friends of Ganondagan and the Ganondagan State Historic Site.
