Sonnenberg Receives Grant Funding to Support Japanese GardenSonnenberg’s Japanese Garden is one of 250 Japanese Gardens in the U

Sonnenberg’s Japanese Garden is one of 250 Japanese Gardens in the United States and just one of 100 Japanese Gardens in the U.S. with a tea house.  In February, Sonnenberg was awarded a $12,000 grant from the Rochester Area Community Foundation for its Japanese Tea House Renovation Project.

David Hutchings, Executive Director of Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park, received a GO! Grant which enabled him to accept an invitation to attend the regional meeting of the North American Japanese Garden Initiative held at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden on June 28, 2010.  The grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency, and administered by Museumwise, allowed Hutchings to share ideas about Japanese Garden-related  resources and sustainability practices with employees of public and private gardens with a Japanese Garden, Japanese garden designers and builders along with Japan-related cultural artists and organizations.

This September Sonnenberg will collaborate with the Rochester Oriental Garden Society, Rochester Area Haiku Group, the Rochester Japanese Association, the Bonsai Society of Upstate New York and Ikebana International, Rochester Chapter 53 to present a weekend celebration of Japanese culture.  Proceeds from these events will support Sonnenberg’s Japanese Tea House Restoration Project.
