RPO CONCERTS Share "The Sound of America"in Rochester, Greece, and Penfield

Three free "Around the Town" series concerts by the Rochester  Philharmonic Orchestra in the City of Rochester, Greece, and Penfield next month performed give musical answers to the question of what is the sound of "American" music, and how did it - and American culture - influence European composers.  Conductor Michael Butterman (The Louise and Henry Epstein Family Chair) leads the RPO with guest soprano Elena O'Connor.

The Around the Town concert dates and venues are as follows:
  • Thursday, February 18 at 7:30 pm; Monroe Community Hospital (435 E. Henrietta Rd.)
  • Friday, February 19 at 7:30 pm; Hope Lutheran Church (1301 Vintage Lane, Greece)
  • Saturday, February 20 at 7:30 pm; Penfield High School (25 High School Drive, Penfield)

All three concerts are free, and no tickets are required.  All will include short works by such composers as Copland, Stravinsky, Scott Joplin, Kurt Weill, Duke Ellington, Debussy, Henry "Harry" Burleigh, William Arms Fisher, and Antonin Dvoràk.

Soprano Elena O'Connor, a 1998 PHS graduate, will be featured in two of the pieces.  After studying at the Eastman School of Music, she graduated from the University of Miami's School of Music, where she sang one of the lead roles in the American premiere of Luigi Mancinelli's Paola e Francesca. She also was noted by the New York Times for her "standout" performance at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall in Scott Joplin's Treemonisha.  Ms. O'Connor was a multi-year prizewinner in the Palm Beach Opera International Vocal Competition, as well as a winner of the Aspen Music Festival's Vocal Concerto Competition.  After her performance with the Cincinnati May Festival, the Cincinnati Enquirer touted her as "a young star to watch."

The Around the Town program is a community partnership in which the RPO moves from the concert hall into various neighborhoods to perform six free concerts per year designed to engage audiences with light classics and familiar favorites.  Venues include houses of worship and other community locations.  The partner venues assist with promoting the concert in their neighborhood and serve as liaison between the RPO and their community.  Around the Town concerts are sponsored by The Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation, the Joseph C. and Marie C. Wilson Foundation, and Xerox Corporation. The Penfield concert is made possible with support from Josephine and Tae Whang, The Guido and Ellen Palma Foundation, and The New York State Council on the Arts.
